Reinert Brandvik was a well-liked farmer and “modern shoemaker.” Quite well read and apparently a good storyteller, he was often asked to entertain in the neighborhood with his humorous tales. Storytelling seems a family trait thereafter for his grandson John Melland was also known in his South Dakota community as a clever and imaginative spinner of yarns.
