Dorothy was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and raised in Groton, South Dakota, where she graduated (as valedictorian) from high school in 1950. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and was a junior there when she met and married Marion Maurstad in Luverne, Minnesota. Marion was in the military service and, during the years he served, they lived in several different states and countries, including Oregon, Nebraska, France, Hawaii and Germany.

He retired from the Army in 1969, and in 1979 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where Dorothy was readmitted to Augustana College. She completed her degree in music/social work/sociology in 1980, graduating the same day as her daughter, Tracy, graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls. She and Maury then moved to Elk Point, SD, where they played many enjoyable rounds of golf.

She was a piano teacher for many years, a social worker and activities director in several nursing homes, a church organist, a nursing home volunteer, and a bookkeeper for the Elk Point Community Ambulance in Elk Point, South Dakota.

Marion Maurstad was born in Boone County, Nebraska, in 1929. After graduation from Newman Grove, Nebraska, high school in 1947 , he entered the Army and served in the US Air Force and US Army for 20+ years, retiring in 1969 as a Chief Warrant Officer. He served in the continental United States (Texas, Kentucky, California, Arkansas, Oregon) and in Hawaii, Japan, Iwo Jima, Vietnam, France and Germany. The family accompanied him to France (1956-1959), Hawaii and Germany.

While in the military, he received his BBA at the University of Hawaii in 1962. After Maury retired from the military in 1969, the family lived in Beatrice, NE, Sioux Falls, SD, and Mobridge, SD, and after 1981 in Elk Point, SD. He retired from the bank in Elk Point SD in 1993 after serving as Executive Vice President for 12 years.

A memorial service for Maury was held Jan. 22, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church north of Elk Point, SD.

Marion Juell “Maury” Maurstad passed away Sunday, January 16, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Marion was born in Boone County, Nebraska, on July 19, 1929; he was the son of Ingard and Marie Aase Maurstad. He grew up in Newman Grove, Nebraska, and graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1949. He entered the U.S. Army shortly after graduation and made the military his career. Marion served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the U. S. Army in 1969 after having served in various bases in the United States as well as Iwo Jima, Japan, France, Vietnam and Germany. While stationed in Hawaii, he graduated from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

Upon retirement from the military as Chief Warrant Officer, he lived in Beatrice, Nebraska until moving to South Dakota in 1979.

In 1981, Marion and wife Dorothy moved to Elk Point, SD, where he was Executive Vice President of Valley Bank. He retired from the bank in 1993. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Augustana Fellows. He was past president of the Elk Point Lions Club. He was an avid golfer and loved playing bridge and doing magic tricks for his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Windh) Maurstad, their three children: Eric and wife Karen of Crystal Lake, Illinois; Steven and wife Micki of Omaha, Nebraska, and Tracy and husband Michael Murphy of Las Vegas, Nevada. He has six grandchildren: Erin Maurstad of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Bergen Maurstad of Crystal Lake, Illinois; Kirstin Ricketts, Lindsey and Kelsey Maurstad of Omaha, Nebraska, and Grant Leuning of Owatonna, Minnesota. He is also survived by three brothers, two sisters, many nieces and nephews and daughter-in-law Susan Maurstad of Lexington, Nebraska.

ELK POINT, S.D. -- Marion J. "Maury" Maurstad, 75, of Elk Point passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson-Siecke Funeral Home in Elk Point.
