Betty graduated from West High School in Columbus, Ohio in 1937 and from Ohio State University in 1940. She taught elementary education. During World War II she joined the WAVEs in 1944 at age 24 years. After discharge she received her master's degree from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, and tested hearing for the State of Ohio. After her marriage she taught remedial reading and tested hearing for the Lisbon, North Dakota, public schools. She retired in 1975 and in 1980 worked for the NORTH DAKOTA VETERANS’ HOME in Lisbon, working with stroke patients. She was active in the Presbyterian church in Lisbon, North Dakota.

Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, which is north of Lisbon, Ransom County, North Dakota

One source says Jerry and Betty were married in Franklin, Ohio.
Betty’s son wrote that she was buried on 10 April 1991, but the funeral home had said the date was 11 April 1991.

Misc. Notes
The funeral for Jerry B. Melland, 66, Lisbon, ND, was held Monday in the United Presbyterian Church. He died Thursday. [April 16, 1981]

Mr. Melland was born on Nov. 28, 1914, at New Effington, SD, and married Betty Jordan April 3, 1949, at Columbus, Ohio. He had worked for International Harvester at Lisbon and Carrington, ND, farmed near Lisbon, and owned the Melland Motel and Melland Apartments at Lisbon. He also worked for the M & N Fertilizer Service at Lisbon. He served in the Army from 1933 to 1936 and served in the Air Force during World War II. He served as state president of the Motel Association in 1960.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and a son, Mr. Tom (Linda) Sivesind in Norway and Jay, in Richmond, VA.; four sisters, Mrs. Orval (Bernice) Smith, Watertown, SD; Mrs. Arthur (Mabel) Monson, Mrs. George (Gertrude) Knudsen and Mrs. Sven (Gladys) Windh, all of New Effington, and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Gladys Windh, Mrs. Mabel Monson, Mr. and Mrs. George Knudsen Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Kuklish and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Felton from this vicinity attended the funeral.
