According to family Bobby was a big time alcoholic which destroyed the family element.”

In 1990 Doris wrote these memories of her parents:

MOM:
In Canada she made donuts, cinnamon rolls. Mrs. Spencer came often for afternoon coffee. Pastor came too. Killing chickens by wringing their necks.

Younger years. During my early teen years mom wanted me to be a helper to her sisters, Josie and Elinia, and also to Grandma Oswood and Anna Meridith. Many days spent helping them with housework. I hated it!!

For reasons I still don't fully understand, mom and I had many disagreements from the time I was about 15 until I was a grown woman, maybe around 26-27. I finally came to the conclusion that disagreement had no value. I let her be my boss when she came to visit.

There were many good things about her. She was a wonderful grandmother to my children, she was a good cook and loved to do it, she loved (?) to wash clothes (but not iron), she loved to visit, wanted my children to always look good--pretty dresses, nice shoes, hair cuts, etc. My children loved her a great deal.

Even though mom and I didn't always see eye to eye, I came to accept her as she was. We enjoyed each other in her last years with us.

DAD:
The first thing I remember about dad is his coming home from the hospital and being in a hospital bed near the bottom of the stairs. He was very sick and we had to be quiet. He went back to the hospital, and when he came home he was able to walk with a cane. When we came to Tacoma we were not supposed to sit on his lap because it would cut off his circulation.

In Tacoma, Carl and I used to help dad clean a couple of churches. He would walk and we would roller skate. He walked very fast.

On one occasion when I didn't come straight home from school, he said he was going to spank me. I told him I would tell mom. He then really got angry and spanked me in the garage. Mom got upset that I had upset him and she spanked me too.

When I couldn't sleep at night, I'd come downstairs and dad would be playing cards with Lloyd and his friends. They would let me sit with them while they smoked, drank beer and played cards.

Dad always had a beautiful yard, was always busy. He cooked lunch for Carl and me. He fixed Carl's pet rabbit (after it had been run over) for lunch one day. Of course Carl got sick.

He enjoyed having company. One time he ate all the cookies meant for guests and mom wasn't too happy about that.
