Thor became a baker’s apprentice at age 15 and was a baker his entire working life; in 1916 he was able to buy a bakery for himself and his sons. Of few words, he was a solid and dependable Christian, serving on a committee for the poor (from 1907 to 1930) and on a city council (from 1901 to 1928).
