Torbjørn studied medicine at the University of Oslo, finishing a medical diploma in 1923 with honors. Then he established a medical practice in Haugesund, which was quite successful.

Dr. Nervik summarized his philosophy of life in the words of the famous Norwegian explorer, Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930):: “life is here and --- now.”
