Gertrude, known as Ellen, and her sister Gladys were the only two of their grandchildren that Olander and Cecilia Windh ever saw. Ellen did so in about 1928 when she was about 9. She and her mother Alma visited both Norra Rörum, her dad’s home, and Svalöv, her mother’s home about 22 US miles to the south and west of Norra Rörum.
Ellen wrote:
“About our dad, he came to the USA the 21st of May, 1902. He came to Canada in 1905 and worked in Craik before starting blacksmithing in Aylesbury. He was a wonderful hard-working family-loving man. I can still picture the sweat running off him in the hot summer in the shop. He’d run to the house for a pitcher of lemonade or ice water. His work was never done, but Sunday was a day for church and to take the family for a drive. We would drive into a friend’s yard and never get out of the car, as he said we were too many. He was a good provider; we always had a garden even if it meant hauling water from the Arm River for vegetables, and for his lovely flower garden and fruit bushes in our yard. He always had a cow, a few chickens, and a couple of pigs, and a full cellar for winter. Both my parents made two trips to Sweden, never together, and Gladys and I were lucky enough to go along.”
