From a booklet created for a Klusmann family reunion in New Salem on June 18-19, 2005.

Fred Klusmann was born September 11, 1880, in Addieville, Illinois, to William Frederick and Wilhelmena (Meyer) Klusmann. At the age of seven he moved with his parents and siblings to a homestead which his parents established north of New Salem. The first year he, his three brothers and his parents, along with the Henry Holle family (Mrs. Holle was a sister to Fred's father), lived in a three-room house until their house could be built.

He often spoke of the difficult pioneer years. He remembered “working out” for another farmer at $125 per year. That money bought a wagon, harness and a fur coat.

He homesteaded in Oliver County and operated his farm there for a time before selling it to William Meir so that he could buy land closer to New Salem.

Katharine Poehler was born in 1880 in Addieville, Illinois, and lived with the Detrich Huenke family in Addieville from her fourth birthday after her mother died. At sixteen she came to New Salem to live with the Henry Gaebe family. She had many happy memories of working as a clerk at the Farmer's Store in New Salem.

Fred and Katharine were married in 1907 and began their life together in their newly built home on his land seven miles north of New Salem. They lived there until 1948 when they bought a house in town and moved to New Salem. During their marriage they had a son, Clarence, and a daughter, LaVerne. LaVeme (b. 1917) married Helge Nygren and Clarence (b. 1910) married Erma Loy. Clarence took over managing and operating the farm when his parents moved to town. LaVerne lived her married life in Flasher, North Dakota.

Fred and Katharine celebrated their golden wedding on October 7, 1957, and Fred remained interested in the farm until his death on October 20, 1964. Katharine continued to live in their New Salem home until 1970 at which time she went to live in Elm Crest Manor in New Salem. She lived there until her death March 27, 1971.
