From a booklet created for a Klusmann famiily reunion in New Salem on June 18-19, 2005.
William Detring, Jr. was born in Libertyville, Missouri, on November 20, 1883. His reason for coming to North Dakota was because he did not like the hot humid weather of the south and he had an aunt living in New Salem, his dad's sister, Mrs. William Gaebe.
He was a twin in a family of thirteen children with three sets of twins. It might be mentioned that his aunt, Mrs. Gaebe, also had thirteen children and three sets of twins.
Bill worked at the Farmer Mercantile Co. and continued to live and work in New Salem when he met and married Carrie Klusmann on May 26, 1910. Carrie, daughter of William Fredrick and Wilhelmina (Meyer) Klusmann, was born on July 28, 1888. The couple had three daughters: Edna who married Fred Warren; Bernice, who married Ervin Dettmann and Harold Dey; and Lois, who married Waldon Westermann.
For many years Bill Detring was employed as a mechanic at Blank Motor Sales. Later he became a mail carrier, meeting the mail trains from the east and west every day and taking the mail to the post office and then each day taking the mail to Youngtown and Center.
Carrie enjoyed knitting and quilting and staying at home. She looked after Grandma Holle who lived in the end house on their block.
Their home in New Salem was the one built by William Klusmann, which they had lived in upon their retirement from farming in the Youngtown vicinity. Daughter Lois was born in this house.
William died on July 10, 1959. Carrie was the first resident of Elm Crest Manor and died on October 20, 1970.
