Misc. Notes
From a booklet created for a Klusmann famiily reunion in New Salem on June 18-19, 2005.
Ferdinand Ellwein, son of Henry and Christian (Dochter) Ellwein, was born in McIntosh County, North Dakota (now the city of Zeeland) on January 18, 1890.
His wife, Minettie Klusmann, daughter of William F. Klusmann and Wilhemena (Meyer) Klusmann, was born at Youngtown, North Dakota on February 3, 1894.
They were married on June 30, 1914. They had two children: Gilbert, married to Iris Sarff, and Ruth, married to Edward Christiansen. There are six grandchildren.
Mrs. Ellwein, prior to her marriage, was employed at the Youngtown Store. Poor health for much of her married life limited her outside activities and travel; however, she did much for her church and community organizations. She died in February, 1955.
Mr. Ellwein, after the death of his wife, made his home with Ruth and Eddie Christiansen in New Salem until his death in December, 1966.
Mr. Ellwein attended Dakota Business College, Fargo, North Dakota, in 1907 and 1908 and entered the banking field with the City National Bank in Bismarck in April 1909 as a bookkeeper. During his first year he said a watercress device was used to make copies of documents because there wasn't carbon paper. It was a slow arduous process. During these early years all posting entries were done by hand with daily balances for each patron being erased and new balances entered.
Sensing the opportunity of a banking career in a small community and having an advantage of being proficient in the German language, Mr. Ellwein came to New Salem in August, 1910, as the assistant cashier for the Farmers and Merchants Bank. He was cashier there from 1918 to 1931.
During the years 1931 to 1933 he served as receiver and collector for the closed Farmers and Merchants Bank. In 1933 the Security State Bank was opened with Ntr. Ellwein as cashier. Mr. Ellwein's banking career totaled fiffry-four years in the New Salem area.
Civic activities were always a mainstay in his life. Through the years he served several terms as City Auditor, as a flreman, as a charter member and a president of the Lions Club, and as treasurer at Pease Church. He was also the New Salem School District treasurer for thirty-five consecutive years.
Shortly after the death of Mrs. Ellwein's parents in 1922, Nettie's sister Emma Klusmann joined the family and made her home with them until 1955.
