He came to America (in the 1880s?), to Lake Mary near Alexandria, MN, when he was already 56 years old and daughter Katie was six. He chopped down trees and built a log house for the family to live in. The children had to go out working for their board and room. For instance, their daughter Katie went babysitting at age six and received only three months of education her entire life.
