In 1946 Elwood Dennis fathered out of wedlock, by Kathleeen Lillian Gardiner, a male child. She was at that time married to a man whose surname was Oliver so the child, Dennis Oliver, in accordance with then-prevailing English law and custom, took his mother's marital surname which she still legally bore.
