Gerda attended school near New Salem and was confirmed in German in the Evangelical Church on August 20, 1933. George and Gerda farmed together on the family farm until retiring in 1976. She kept busy making rugs, afghans, crocheting, and doing other fancy work.

George and Gerda operated the Kreidt farm four miles west of New Salem, ND, as a dairy farm. Gerda also raised chickens and sold their eggs. George retired in 1976 due to health problems but continued to live on the farm until 2002, when he moved into the assisted living units at Elm Crest Manor. He then became a resident of the nursing home in January of 2004. He was a lifelong member of the Peace Church.
