Before farming, Roy was a 'jack of all trades' working at many different jobs, such as cherry picking in the West, electrical work, construction, trucking and custom combining. His ingenuity and ability to improvise saved them many dollars over the years and helped the farm to run efficiently.
Growing up during the Depression, Roy never wasted anything and made full use of the many things they had, including their 54 year old refridgerator. Roy and Wilma farmed new New Salem, ND until they moved to rural Nelson, MN, in 1959. They raised chickens, hogs, dairy and later beef cattle.
After thirty years farming, the Heids retired and became snow birds, traveling south each winter. After several years, they began spending winters at the Gateway RV Park in Raymondville, TX. Roy enjoyed playing violin and harmonica in the 'jam sessions' they would have at the park and for the residents at the nearby Retonia Manor Retirement Home. He enjoyed the people they met at Gateway and in 2006 he was named King of the Park's Mardi Gras festivities. Roy also looked forward to his summers back on the farm in Minnesota working with beef cattle and making hay with his daughter, Collette, up until the age of 93. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Carlos, MN, and served four years on the church board. For over 18 years, Roy served on the Cenex board in Alexandria, MN.
Roy had a great love for music, whether playing it or listening to it. A bright spot in his day would be to visit with Vicar Phil Petersen when they would play violin duets and have Wilma or whomever was there sing along. Roy also enjoyed traveling across country in the RV. He liked a friendly game of pool, card playing, dancing, or just sitting alone with a good book.
When living in North Dakota, Roy hunted all sorts of game for supper along with trapping and tanning furs. Later, he enjoyed duck and goose hunting trips to Lac Qui Parle with family and friends. He was a brilliant and faithful man who loved his family very much. Roy had a quick wit, a great sense of humor, and was always ready with a clever comeback. He was a hard worker and a wonderful provider.

In addition to helping on the farm and raising her family, Wilma worked in retail sales and waitressing before starting a job on the assembly line at the 3M Company in Alexandria, MN. She worked in the labeling department and also did sanding belt assembly. She
worked at 3M for over 21 years before her retirement in 1989.
Soon after retiring, the Heids began wintering in Raymondville, TX, where Wilma began doing volunteer work at the child Protection Services. She also gave of her time with the Gateway Musicians, who entertained the residents at the Retonia Retirement Home near the Gateway RV Park where they lived. She was active in the park community, whether playing cards, bingo, journaling or attending her weekly music sessions. She loved singing and dancing and listened to music daily.
In 2006, she was crowned the queen of the Mardi Gras Parade at the park. She served as treasurer and secretary for the Gateway club for a couple of years, as well as secretary for the Gateway Musicians for six years. Wilma also enjoyed crafting, gardening, and traveling.
She had a great love for people but also enjoyed the smallest of God's creatures, feeding birds and animals wherever she lived.
Wilma was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Carlos, MN. She served on the church board for three years, was a Sunday School teacher and also led a Bible study for many years. She was active in the Ladies Aid and helped on the Hospitality committee for eight years. Just as she gave of herself to others, Wilma was also a kind, generous and doting wife, mother, grandma and sister who valued her family and friends.
Wilma died of cancer.
