Gilbert W. "G.W." Ellwein, 90, Bismarck, died Jan. 19, 2006, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 24, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Bismarck, with the Rev. Donna Dohrmann officiating. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Cremation has taken place.
Gilbert was born May 18, 1915, in New Salem, to Ferd and Minnette (Klusman) Ellwein. He graduated from New Salem High School in 1933. After high school, he joined the Air Force and was a veteran of World War II.
He married Iris Sarff on July 20, 1942, in Stockton, Calif. After living in Mora, Minn., and Rapid City, S.D., they then moved to Bismarck in 1955. He spent his adult life in the banking industry and was a former North Dakota State Banking Commissioner. A current member of the Bismarck American Legion, Elks and former member of the Kiwanis, and he was an advocate and mentor for the Youth Correctional Center in Mandan.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Gail (Eugene) Smith, Sidney, Mont.; two sons, Dr. Gary (Linda), Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Greg (Carol), Bismarck; six grandchildren, Ann Block, Mark Ellwein, Chad Smith, Casey Smith, Cody Smith and Brett Ellwein; six great-grandchildren, Brendon Block, Rachel Block, Rope Smith, Bailey Smith, Abigail Smith and Dylan Smith; and one sister, Ruth Christiansen, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
