According to castlegarden.org, in America Johann Friedrich Holt may have been known as Frederich Hohlt. On January 1, 1848, at age 48, he arrived (possibly at New York City) from Bremen on the ship George Washington with his wife and three children. His last residence was listed as Wehden, Germany. While there is a village in Germany today named Wehden, it is in the far north alost on the North Sea. Most certainly Frederich came from Wehdem in present-day Northrhein-Westphalia (just east of Osnabrück) where many of the Gaebe and Klusmann families also came from.

Accompanying him were his wife Louise (age 31), his son Henry (age 6), daughter Henriette (age 4) and daughter Caroline (age 1). This corrects other sources which suggest that Caroline, at least, was born in America.
