Misc. Notes
One GAEBE source said that this WILLIAM Gaebe came to America in 1856. His younger brother FRED came about the same time, probably with him. Two years later their father came also with two younger siblings, their brother KARL and their sister ENGEL.
He was seriously wounded fighting with the Union forces in the Civil War.
Herman WILLIAM lost his wife CAROLINE in May 1868 at age 22, soon after she gave birth to CHRISTIAN FREDRICK CARL (b. 1866) and ANNA LOUISE (b. 27 Feb. 1868). In September of that same year he was married to DOROTHEA DETRING and the next August they welcomed WILHELM (born in August 1869), the first of 14 more children they had together. Of HERMAN’S 16 children, at least four failed to survive childhood.
Herman WILLIAM’s many descendents, as included here, are taken from an extensive GAEBE genealogy received in February 2016. An earlier source, forgotten long ago, said he had four sons (Henry, John, Walter and Donald), none of whom is listed here.
