Notes by Paul Freise:
Charles Freise was born on the family farm and attended a nearby country school, but rather early in life he assumed considerable responsibility on the farm. After his father died in 1912, Charlie took over the farm's management, with some assistance from his mother. Though the farm had been run quite smoothly and was reasonably modern, Charlie was able to make improvements and increase the productivity. By the time of his marriage in September of 1916, his mother and his younger brother, Paul, had moved to a house built for them in nearby New Salem.
Under Charlie's and later Hubert's management, the Freise farm grew in size and reputation. For instance it received a certificate of merit in 1962-63 "for outstanding accomplishments in soil conservation." Its purebred Polled Hereford cattle have been highly respected.
Charlie and Pauline moved to New Salem shortly after the end of World War II, but Charlie did not completely retire. He did considerable carpenter work, at which he was adept even though he'd had no formal training. He always loved to be in the country, often going out to the farm or fishing. He had a splendid garden.
Gradually Charlie developed some illnesses, moved with Pauline to the Elm Crest Manor nursing home in New Salem late in 1977, and passed away at age 85 the next year. Pauline lived there until she died in 1982.
The New Salem Centennial Book has Charles born April 12, 1893.
